The shower is a great place to contemplate religion. There is something about water running over you as a form abstract cleansing that make you think deeply about stupid things. This morning I was tasked with re-imaging the truth behind the Adam and Eve story from the Bible.
So. In summary. There was a man and woman who lived in paradise until they 'ate' the forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge, at which point they are cast from paradise to live among the rest of us sinful ass holes.
I have decided that this story is in fact a retelling of the origin of soulmates in Greek Mythology. If you don't know this one, listen to:
Basically, human kind started as beings that had four arms, four legs, one head with two faces. These humans were 'man-man', 'woman-woman', or 'man-woman' pairs. They became too strong, so the gods (Zeus) cut each being in half and set them a part from each other so that they would be forever searching and too weak to rise against the gods. Blah blah blah. This is also the origin of sex as a means for procreation.
So, how does this have to do with the story of Adam and Eve? Well. Adam and Eve start as a single being right? Eve is created from the rib of Adam, correct? Meaning that at one point, there was a AdamEve being that was cut a part to create two beings. It isn't until they are separated that they despair and Eve is drawn to the idea of seeking something, anything, to fill up what is missing in her life. Apparently, Adam feels similar because they are both drawn to the idea of Knowledge being the key. So they learn. They have sex. They despair. The devise morals and sin, and suddenly there is no more paradise.
Explanation. I feel that leaving the Garden of Eden, paradise, is more due to the creation of sin, rather than them actually being shoo'd out for eating fruit.
You're saying, "The creation of sin was eating the fruit, right?"
Yes and no. Eating the fruit gave Eve and Adam knowledge. Knowledge lead them to develop a sense of morals. Morals means that there is right and wrong and wrong becomes Sin. One can surmise that sin did not exist until there was knowledge, which would put the fruit at the root of the problem.
See, God, or gods, cannot Sin. They live above morals and knowledge. They are a force and do whatever they please. For them, ending a civilization is not mass murder, it is just what they do. It is not Sin.
People, on the other hand, created Sin by gaining knowledge of morals (or what is right and wrong per what the Tree of Knowledge supposedly sold). So, because we were separated by God(s), we are eternally seeking something that will put us back together to be whole and be able to reach our full potential. This means we are eternally chasing knowledge and therefore collapsing into more and more Sin (Knowledge begets Sin), which forever bars us for understand what and were paradise is.
So, Greek Mythology matches with Adam and Eve AND tells us exactly what we are doing to make ourselves miserable.
I love Knowledge. I love Logic. I feel happier for knowing the things that I do. But, can you really argue that Knowledge sets us free, when in reality it gives us more questions and the questions we develop center about how this new knowledge fits into our moral landscape, then we fight, then we Sin as we battle against each other morals, and we are FOREVER without paradise.
